Answer: Only about 2/3 of the businesses that can benefit from baling and recycling currently do. Many business people are so concentrated on the cost of the main source of revenue for their business that they regularly ignore a vital, cost effective tool. Many materials that can be recycled are simply thrown into a waste stream! Materials such as paper, OCC (old corrugated cardboard), aluminum, copper, carpet, shrink wrap, and foam. Plastic and other oil based products are becoming a highly desired recyclable material and as the cost of oil rises, so does the profitability of recycling those materials.
Waste materials is becoming a bigger problem each day as environmental issues raise the cost of land fills and governmental regulations discourage dumping recyclables.
Many waste producers do NOT realize the potential of proper waste management. Cardboard has sold for as much as $400/ton and varies according to the demand for recycled paper. Currently cardboard sells for between $120-$140 per ton. Plastic for over $200 per ton. Aluminum and copper are at almost all time highs! Carpet prices are skyrocketing! In fact many of the materials that are being thrown into a dumpster today are being separated by the waste hauler and sold to a recycling mill.
